I try playing a bit of an innocent act.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Mr...mask wearing guy...We've gotten into the wrong car, so we're just going to..."
My sentence catches in my throat as the masked driver careens out of the parking lot. Delaina wastes no time in yanking on her seatbelt, and neither do I. We hang on for our lives as our driver races past stop signs and traffic lights. Delaina grabs my hand, partly for reassurance, partly for balance.
Suddently, the van shrieks to a stop, in a place I've never seen before.
The masked driver unmasks himself.
But, before I can see the person's face, I hear glass breaking over my head. As everything goes blurry around me, the last thing I hear before I go under is Delaina screaming "What the hell?", the pieces of glass falling to the floor, and the quiet snickers behind me.
~*~*~*~
My eyes snap open.
What the hell happened?
I try to turn around, thinking that will help me assess, only to find that I can't move my head. Or my hands. My hands are tied together, and squeezed in by another pair of hands, bigger than mine. I have a cellmate.
I try to sit up as best I can, only to hit my head on the ceiling of the tiny room. The room seems to be moving, which my queasy stomach is quick to inform me. Wait...the ceiling?
I then come to the conclusion that I'm stuck with another person inside the trunk of a car. The sunlight coming in through small holes tells me that whoever it is wants me and/or Delaina alive...wait...where's Delaina?
Suddently I hear muffled noises on the other side. I try my hardest to strain to hear what's on the other side. Which is when I see the small, but good enough hole in the fabric.
I try to work my way around my still unconscious cellmate to the hole. FInally, I succeed in getting there. I peer through the hole. What I see, to sday the least, freaks me out.
Two ambiguous figures sitting on either side of what looks like Delaina, who's holding together pretty well. Delaina's shift in her seat informs me that she's a sitting duck for a pair of gunmen, as the figures are carrying insanely large guns.
"How long till we get there?" one backseat voice asks. His voice is deep, That normally means gargantuan.
"Not long now." a sinister sounding voice answers. The driver. My breath catches in my throat.
"Noah, I've got to ask. Why them? Anybody else from their organization would have worked fine. You could have gotten the guy's brother, the eleven year old, and that skinny ghostly looking girl." A new voice. Female.
"We have the ghost girl here." the voice called Noah retorts. I roll my eyes.
"Alright, fine. But why this curly headed bitch here?" the female asks, turning around to glare at Delaina, giving me a perfect opportunity to study her face. Young, blonde, green eyes, insanely pointy nose. "And why keep her conscious?"
I can feel Delaina getting madder by the second. It doesn't take a retrograde clairvoyant to see i nto the past and know there is some previously bad blood between them.
"Because, Yasmine." Noah answers, "she's the only one who knows you personally. Ghost girl can't tell you from a hole in the wall, so she's useless. For now."
Yasmine? That name sounds excessively familiar. I take a deep breath of calm.
And I exhale a breath of panic. I've got to help her, but how can I in the trunk? How can I if I have no idea what happened?
That's when I feel a shift next to me. My trunk mate has woken up to join the party.
"Huh...what's going on?..." It's a male voice. I turn over to address Mr. Sleeping Beauty.
The face whose eyes I meet shocks me. He looks surprised, angry, and surprisingly...scared.
"Alexandar?"
